SYNOPSIS

Alexander Hamilton, an orphan immigrant from the Caribbean, moves to New York City, where he meets Arthur Burr and other historical figures. After securing a position as George Washington’s right-hand man, he meets and marries Eliza Schuyler, and his dreams of building a new nation starts manifesting. 

A newly formed government, with Alexander Hamilton as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, begins its work, but not without tensions building between Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, and Arthur Burr becoming increasingly jealous of Hamilton’s success. In a devastating turn of events, Hamilton is blackmailed after having an affair, and Hamilton endorses his rival Jefferson. This leads to a massive and highly emotional fall-out, and Hamilton being killed in a duel with Arthur Burr.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has described Hamilton as a musical about “America then, told by America now”. With inspiration from Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton, and drawing heavily from rap and hip-hop culture, R&B, pop, soul, and show-tunes, Lin-Manuel Miranda finished work on Hamilton in 2015, and decided to break the mould by casting non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures of the United States. 

Hamilton premiered in February 2015 at the Public Theatre in lower Manhattan, instantly achieving massive acclaim and selling out the entire seven-month run. The musical then transferred to Broadway, where it opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in August 2015 to rave reviews. 

To date, Hamilton has racked up no less than ten Lucille Lortel Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, a Theatre World Award, a Clarence Derwent Award, an Obie Award, eleven Tony Awards, two Drama League Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy Award, a Fred and Adele Astaire Award, and seven Laurence Oliver Awards.

THE AU-RENE THEATRE

The iconic 2,658-seater Au-Rene Theatre, situated at the Broward Centre for the Performing Arts on 201 SW 5th Avenue in the Sailboat Bend neighborhood, downtown Fort Lauderdale is a pit-stop for touring Broadway productions.
